Room sprays are typically filled with toxic ingredients especially hormone disrupting synthetic fragrances! Linen sprays are specialty sprays that can often end up being very overpriced. Sprays meant to freshen your home should always be DIYed in order to avoid harmful chemical and save money.

What Exactly is Linen Spray?

A linen spray is meant to freshen up mainly soft surfaces that either can’t be washed like upholstery or freshen up clothes, sheets, blankets towels etc. in between washes. Since most linen sprays contain alcohol, they can act as a mild disinfectant as well.

This homemade linen spray recipe is the same as DIY air fresheners so as an added bonus, it can be used to freshen up the overall smell in your home.

This linen spray recipe is great to use before guests are coming when you don’t have time to deep clean or even diffuse essential oils. A quick spray can make a big difference!

Why Make Your Own DIY Linen Spray?

Products like Lysol and FeBreeze contain a few alarming, harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, benzene and artificial scents. When you spray these cleaning products all over your living space, you are spraying toxic chemicals that are effecting your immune system, endocrine system, nervous system and even your skin.

Plus, it couldn’t be easier! This DIY recipe is simply a matter of mixing water, vodka and essential oils in a spray bottle and giving it a good shake!

Where to Use DIY Linen Spray:

  • Bed sheets
  • Linen closet
  • Washing machines
  • Soft furnishings
  • Pet Beds
  • Rugs
  • Towels
  • Mattresses
  • Use while ironing to get out wrinkles and freshen clothes

You can also use this natural spray in the bathroom, as a room spray, furniture refresher or even keep it in your car!I made a large bottle to keep in the house but you could make small bottles to keep in different spots around your house.

If you have a spare bedroom, making a lovely linen spray and leaving it in a basket with toiletries is such a thoughtful touch.

Where to Not Use Linen Spray:

Obviously you need to avoid spraying on leather furniture since the spray can stain the leather.

If you are concerned your fabric might be susceptible to water stains, you should try a small surface first just to be cautious.

I don’t have expensive furniture-we stick to IKEA so we can remove everything and wash since we love animals more than expensive furniture so I have never had any issue with the spray staining. I have had microfibre, tweed and cotton covers.

Essential Oils for DIY Linen Spray:

I used Lavender because it is so relaxing and just makes sense if you are going to use this on your sheets since it is helpful when it comes to calming the mind and inducing sleep.I also added a woodsy scent to the lavender to give it a more masculine smell! I also added in bergamot essential oil which is considered a citrus oil and is actually the scent of Earl Grey Tea. I love how it pairs with lavender and lifts the Scots Pine.

You could use any essential oil you like!Ylang YlangandGeraniumare very potent and won’t require as many drops aslavenderandgrand fir. Mood liftingFrankincenseand invigoratingLemonare light in smell and might need a bit more drops.

Feel free to choose your favorite essential oil combo but keep in mind you should stick to around 50 drops of essential oil per 16 ounces. However, if the smell is not strong enough you can always add more essential oils.

Where to Find the Best Essential Oils:

I get most of my oils fromPlant Therapy. I like them because of their free, fast shipping, affordable prices, organic, high quality oils and huge variety. I also loveMountain Rose Herbsessential oils as well.

Why Do You Need Alcohol For a DIY Linen Spray?

You add alcohol into a homemade spray for several reasons. Alcohol helps the oil and water combine so that the scent lasts longer. It also helps the spray to dry faster once it hits a surface. Also, alcohol helps preserve your spray. Without it, you could end up spraying bacteria all over your home which is not what we want!

If you don’t have vodka, you can use unscented witch hazel or even rubbing alcohol but neither one of these ingredients are totally scent free and will interfere with the overall smell. However, I would still recommend making the spray anyway because the difference in smell is not enough to be a deal breaker.

You should know that witch hazel might not be as strong of a preservative as rubbing alcohol or vodka so I would recommend making a much smaller batch. Cut my recipe at least in half if you are using witch hazel.

Is Distilled Water Necessary?

Tap water can contain minerals that might stain fabrics. This is why we use distilled water rather than tap or even filtered water. Also, using distilled water keeps your linen spray fresh longer.
